Minimally invasive surgery

Minimally invasive surgery is the overarching term for surgical procedures that use technology and techniques that limit the number of incisions required. Large incisions typically require a longer recovery time, while smaller incisions heal quicker and offer less physical trauma to the patient. Laparoscopy and robotic surgery are the primary methods of minimally invasive surgery that we use.

Laparoscopic surgery

A laparoscopic procedure involves the insertion of a medical device, called a laparoscope, through a small incision. The laparoscope is built with a camera inside, providing enhanced visualization and enabling the use of specialized surgical instruments to perform the procedure. Common procedures we perform using laparoscopy include appendectomy, balloon sinuplasty (for adults and kids), hysterectomy and hernia repair.

Minimally invasive surgery offer benefits such as less blood loss, less postoperative pain, fewer/smaller scars and a faster recovery time.

Robotic surgery

Robotic surgery, a form of minimally invasive surgery, offers patients access to complex procedures performed through only a few small incisions. This type of surgery is aided by a robotic surgical system that your surgeon remains in control of during the entirety of surgery. The system allows greater visualization and enhanced surgical dexterity.

We offer robotic surgery as an option in the following specialties: bariatric, general, gynecologic, urogynecologic, orthopedic, pediatrics and gastrointestinal (GI) surgeries.

Bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, offers surgical solutions to patients with morbid obesity (typically considered to be 100 pounds or more overweight). There are several types of weight loss surgery, but the focus is to reduce the overall intake of food while also reducing the body's absorption of calories.

We perform the following weight loss procedures:

• Gastric balloon
• Gastric banding
• Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass)
• Laparoscopic gastric sleeve
• Revisional bariatric surgery

General surgery

General surgery is a surgical specialty dealing with conditions affecting the organs and structures of the abdomen and gastrointestinal (GI) system. We perform both traditional, open surgery and provide minimally invasive options through laparoscopy for patients undergoing a general surgery procedure.

Additionally, many gynecologic conditions also affect the female urinary system. The area of medicine that treats these conditions is called urogynecology. We surgically treat both gynecologic and urogynecologic conditions, including:

Pediatric surgery

At Plantation General Hospital, our full-service pediatric care includes a range of surgical options, if surgery is the best form of treatment. We take special care to ensure the proper sedation of your child with our on-site pediatric anesthesiologist. We specialize in pediatric balloon sinuplasty, for kids with chronic sinusitis, and orthopedic surgery. Our pediatric orthopedic surgeons commonly treat kids with clubfoot, fractures and scoliosis.
